The construction of the last section of the North Island main trunk line required major new viaducts in the hilly sections of the central North Island. One of the earliest completed was the Makōhine viaduct near Ōhingaiti between Hunterville and Mangaweka. This image shows the first train crossing the completed viaduct in June 1902. The structure was 72.3 metres high and 228 metres long.
