A small group of peace supporters prepare for a sandwich-board procession through Wellington streets, around 1940. It is led by Ormond Burton, a Methodist minister and social activist. During the 1930s the peace movement gained support on the political left and in some churches. Christian followers took to heart the biblical commandment not to kill other people. The movement often got a hostile reception during the Second World War. It attracted more people from the 1950s because of the threat of nuclear war.
