In 1902 Scots-American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie offered to fund a free public library in Dunedin. Carnegie had been giving money for the construction of public libraries throughout the world for almost 20 years, and New Zealand benefited from his largesse. Eighteen Carnegie libraries were opened in New Zealand between 1908 and 1916. Click on the images to see a photo of each library.
