After escaping with many followers from exile on the Chatham Islands to the East Coast, Māori prophet and military leader Te Kooti moved inland, seeking to establish a secure position in Te Urewera. Te Kooti later returned to Poverty Bay, raiding the settlement at Matawhero and killing between 50 and 55 – virtually all – of its inhabitants. Besieged at Ngātapa, he escaped inland, but many of his party were killed by their opponents.
