Once biological material had been hauled to the surface, it was processed in this laboratory and placed in test-tubes and bottles for further study. Everything had to be secured in built-in racks as the ship was liable to roll. Specimens were examined under microscopes, identified, dissected and drawn. Descriptions and detailed drawings of the organisms were eventually published, filling 50 volumes.
