This pie graph shows the geographical distribution of the more than 1,000 fish species found in New Zealand waters. Almost half the fish species found around New Zealand also occur throughout the world’s oceans. Many are oceanic species which travel widely through open waters away from land. Endemic species (found only in New Zealand) tend to be small rock-pool fish such as triplefins. Indo-West Pacific species are those found in the western Pacific and Indian Oceans. In New Zealand these occur mainly around the Kermadec Islands and off Northland. Many fish species found in New Zealand also occur in Australia.
