Most iwi (tribes) have important links to inland and coastal waterways throughout New Zealand. Both the Tainui and Aotea canoes were hauled across the portage at Ōtāhuhu, from Tāmaki River to Manukau Harbour before ending up in Waikato and Taranaki. This view of Manukau Harbour is from Whatipu (Manukau Heads).
