Kōrero: Geomorphology – a history

Kenneth Cumberland

Geographer Kenneth Cumberland arrived in New Zealand as a young graduate in 1938, and was immediately struck by how different the landscape was to his native England. He later commented that it seemed that nature ran rampant in New Zealand.

Cumberland did much to popularise the study of landscapes, and showed how much human activity had changed the landscape. In this extract from the 1981 TV series Landmarks, he talks about the effects of volcanic activity on the landscape.
