Steve Sumner shoots for goal

A man in a white New Zealand football uniform kicks a ball while a member of another team chases behind him during a football game.

Steve Sumner, captain of the All Whites, is shown in action during an elimination game for the 1982 World Cup against Taiwan on 30 May 1981. New Zealand won the game 2–0. At the World Cup finals in Spain, Sumner's finest moment came when he scored a goal against Scotland in Malaga, Spain, on 15 June 1982. At halftime in the game Scotland had been leading 3–0. However, early in the second half Sumner scored his goal. Soon after Steve Wooddin also scored to make it 3–2, before Scotland pulled away to win 5–2.  Although beaten subsequently by the Soviet Union and Brazil, the All Whites had gained international respect.
