In the late 1960s and early 1970s the variety of hairstyles being worn was wide. Many older women continued to visit the hairdresser for a weekly shampoo and set, while others were wearing their hair short. The looser, longer hair favoured by increasing numbers of young women can be seen in this 1970 photograph from the Nelson Photo News. The photo's caption (not shown) referred to the far more dramatic shift in hair styling that was taking place among young men. It asked whether the five women in the photograph liked men to have long or short hair and reports their unanimous vote for long clean hair.
