Cathedral Cove, near Hahei, is a scenic part of Mercury Bay that can be reached only on foot or by sea. The cove’s rock archway is the result of wave erosion of the ignimbrite rock characteristic of this part of the Coromandel Peninsula, the product of massive volcanic eruptions around 8 million years ago
