Fred Evans’ grave

The striking Waihī miner Fred Evans, who died in a violent confrontation with strike-breakers and police in November 1912, was the first New Zealander to be killed in a labour dispute. The monument at his grave in Waikāraka cemetery, Auckland, has a broken column to signify a life ended early.
