Kōrero: Auckland places

Dominion Road

Dominion Road

Dominion Road runs south from Eden Terrace to Waikōwhai – almost the length of the Auckland isthmus. It is a typical tram-era street, with shopping strips scattered along its length. This strip is in the suburb of Mt Eden. Dominion road is immortalised in Don McGlashan’s 1993 song of the same name. Its opening lyrics are:

Dominion Road is bending
Under its own weight
Shining like a strip
Cut from a sheet metal plate
’Cos it’s just been raining.
