Wealthy, cultured and charismatic, Maata Mahupuku was photographed some time between 1907 and 1914, when she was married to farmer George McGregor. A public figure in the Wellington, Wairarapa and Rangitikei regions, she became more widely famous as the close friend and confidant of writer Katherine Mansfield.
