Wellington town belt, 1840 and today

Though town belts were supposed to be protected from development, this has not been the case anywhere in New Zealand. Over time, one-third of the land set aside for the Wellington town belt was taken and used for purposes not envisaged in 1840. The Wellington City Council has a policy of reinstating original town-belt land where it is reasonable and practical to do so. This map shows the original extent of the town belt, and the area it covered in the early 2000s.
