Composition of wealth, 2001

The net wealth of a person is their assets minus their liabilities. It represents the money they would end up with if all their properties, business investments and savings were converted into cash and their debts paid back. This table shows the distribution of assets and liabilities in New Zealand on the basis of a household survey in 2001. It reveals that properties, both people’s homes and their other houses, together constitute over half of all household wealth in New Zealand.
