Trevor Lloyd's cartoon, 'The modern Maori: a family scene in the smart set', appeared in the Auckland Weekly News in 1906. It poked fun at the pretensions of Māori who adopted 'civilised' habits. To the left through the door can be seen a dog, some pigs in the yard and a meeting house in the background; the house is a disordered mess. The implication is that Māori will always revert to 'the pā'. The cartoon also portrays Māori men as subservient to women.
