Karl Maughan, 'Marchent Ridge'

Karl Maughan, 'Marchent Ridge'

With its hyperreal imagery of brightly coloured garden shrubs, this work from 2013 is characteristic of Karl Maughan's painting. The realism, however, only goes so far – there are no weeds, no broken branches, and the autumn colours of the leaves sit oddly beside the spring-flowering rhododendrons. In effect Maughan uses the figurative elements in a structured composition which is as close to an abstract painting as to a photograph. What is novel in this particular painting is Maughan's use of the sun-speckled grass path and the distant blue hills to add interesting new colour tones to his normal palette.
