Story: Volcanoes

Early map of Auckland (1st of 2)

This map was published by the German geologist Ferdinand Hochstetter in 1865–66, in English and German versions. He and artist–surveyor Charles Heaphy spent January 1859 examining the geology of the Auckland area. Hochstetter recognised that many of the volcanic features were similar to those he had seen in the Eifel district of Germany. The cones and lava flows show up very clearly – many have now been quarried away for use in aggregate.
