Story: Theatre companies and producers

Poster for John Fuller's show, early 20th century

The touring theatre and variety company founded by British-born John Fuller was synonymous with entertainment in New Zealand for several decades from the 1890s. Fullers formed permanent theatres in the four main centres – Dunedin had two at one point. The company responded to the rise of cinema by opening a chain of movie theatres, eventually owning 64 around the country. This poster, from the early 20th century, advertises a 'myriorama', a combination of 'music, song, travel and picture', the latter probably screened in the form of a lantern-slide show.
