Story: Actors and acting

Theatre producer Bland Holt, 1898

British-born actor and impresario Bland Holt grew up in a theatre and could act, write scripts, direct and produce with equal confidence. For 30 years from the mid-1870s he was the leading producer of theatrical spectacles in Australia and New Zealand. Zoom in to see details of the cover of this programme from 1898, for the 'thrilling and realistic Franco-Algerian melodrama Straight from the heart!' at the Wellington Opera House. The portraits are of Holt and his second wife, Florence, who appeared with him in many productions.
