Story: New Zealand Wars

Confiscations map

This map shows the major areas of land confiscated under the New Zealand Settlements Act 1863. It does not show smaller parcels of land outside these boundaries that were confiscated. Land was meant to be confiscated from iwi which had fought against the Crown, but the inconsistent application of the Act and the fact that many iwi had divided loyalties meant that many Māori believed they had lost land unfairly. For those who had fought against the Crown, the loss of land was a grievance that lasted for many generations.
