New Zealand cities were geographically small in the 19th century before the development of public transport systems. People largely walked, rode horses or later bicycles, took horse-drawn hansom cabs or hackney carriages if they could afford the fares or, in the case of the wealthy, rode in their own carriages. This 1867 map of Auckland shows a small city centre with very little development into the inner city suburbs of Parnell or Ponsonby.
