Story: Workshop industries
At least one panel beater's workshop is found in almost every small town in New Zealand. Panel beating evolved from coachbuilding, and is an example of a workshop industry that adapted from making products from start to finish – in this case horse-drawn coaches – to repairing and servicing imported products, such as motor vehicles. Ngatea Panelbeaters in the Hauraki Plains, set up in the 1960s, not only did accident repairs but also restored classic cars such as this Riley convertible.
