Story: Workplace safety and compensation
St John’s ambulanceman R. Gray treats the injured eye of a worker at the Hutt railway workshops in 1952. Employers paid for the treatment of their injured staff until the introduction of the Accident Compensation Corporation in 1972, when levies from workers, employers, car owners and government paid for treatment.
