Until 1955 New Zealanders were unable to buy home-grown wines in small quantities (less than 2 gallons or 7.6 litres), except from a hotel. From 1959 they could purchase a single bottle of New Zealand wine from a wine seller. But even in 1970, Preston’s wine store in Wellington felt the need to assure customers that they could buy a single bottle of New Zealand wine – the sign at middle left reads, 'NZ wines sold by the single bottle'.
