Story: Whenua – how the land was shaped
This 1838 painting of Poverty Bay by Joel Polack shows a traditional canoe with sails. Their distinctive triangular shape inspired the naming of Ngā Rā o Kupe (Kupe’s Sails) at Palliser Bay.
