Hauturu (Little Barrier Island)

Hauturu, which means ‘resting place of the winds’, was acquired by the government as a nature reserve in 1894 and the last Ngāti Wai family evicted. However Ngāti Wai people have a continuing relationship with ‘Little Barrier Island’ as it is known. They have been involved in environmental programmes on the island such as the eradication of the kiore, the Polynesian rat.
