Story: Whanganui region
In May 1864 downriver Māori fought at Moutoa Island, just north of Rānana, against upriver Māori who threatened to march on Whanganui town. Later that month Dr Isaac Featherston (centre), the superintendent of Wellington province (of which Whanganui was a part) met with Whanganui Māori at Pūtiki pā. He presented leader Mete Kīngi Te Rangi Paetahi (in the light-coloured cloak) with a resolution of the provincial council thanking downriver Māori for their support.
