Pūtiki pā, about 1850

Pūtiki pā, about 1850

Pūtiki was slightly downstream and across the river from the Whanganui settlement. Its people had close economic links with the town, and a protective attitude to it. In this romanticised image, artist John Gilfillan captures the economic activity and human interaction of daily life in the pā.
