Oneida homestead

Oneida homestead

Oneida homestead, in Fordell, east of Whanganui, was designed for the Burnett family by Whanganui architect and surveyor George Frederic Allen. The Burnetts had travelled in the United States before coming to New Zealand, and the house’s steeply pitched roof and many gables reflect an American style. Oneida was the name of a utopian socialist community which thrived in the 1850s and 1860s in New York state – the Burnetts may have visited it.
