Story: Whanganui places

Pūtiki pā, 1918

Pūtiki pā, 1918

A big crowd gathered at Pūtiki , probably in 1919, to welcome back two platoons of the (Māori) Pioneer Battalion, which had fought on the western front in Europe in the First World War. The large flag in the centre was presented to Whanganui Māori by European women in the 1860s, to commemorate the 1864 victory over upriver Māori on Moutoa Island.
