Whale protecting her calf

Southern right whales spend the winter near subantarctic Campbell Island where they come to give birth and mate. This video clip shows a mother protecting her calf. In the 19th century right whales often bred on the South Island’s east coast. Whalers exploited the mothers’ protective instincts by capturing the calves, and then the adult females, who would stay close to them.
