Ephemeral wetland, Tangimoana

Ephemeral wetlands appear in hollows where variation in rainfall and evaporation leads to ponding in winter and spring and drying in summer. Low-growing herbaceous plants form a turf, and there are sometimes rush and sedgelands. At Tangimoana on the Manawatū coast, a rushland of oioi covers dune hollows that alternate between wet and dry.
