Story: Wetland birds
An Australasian crested grebe sits on its large floating nest on Lake Alexandrina in South Canterbury. It is brooding a stripy chick on its back – grebes often swim like this too. The adult has a topknot-like crest and a prominent neck ruff, both of which are raised and fluffed out during courtship displays
