Arahura River

This aerial view of the Arahura River looks from the river mouth towards the Southern Alps in the east. The settlement of Arahura is in the upper centre, on the north side of the Arahura River. This is one of the oldest settlements on the West Coast, where pounamu (greenstone) was collected and traded.

Almost all the pounamu found on the West Coast occurs as boulders in the Arahura River.
