Story: West Coast region
Peter Hawes’s play The gods of warm beer recalls the Westport of his youth. Set during the 1951 industrial dispute, the play deals mainly with how the golden boy of Buller rugby is headhunted by a visiting English rugby-league team, and the social condemnation that ensues. The play is partly based on the experiences of Hawes’s father, a Buller rugby union player who went to England to play league.
