Story: West Coast region
As in other parts of the South Island, farms in the West Coast have been converting from sheep to dairy. With a temperate climate and year-round rainfall, the West Coast is much better suited to dairying than sheep farming. In the 2007 agricultural production census it was the only region in New Zealand where there were more dairy cows than sheep.
