Story: West Coast region
The West Coast region is a long narrow strip west of the Southern Alps, isolated from the rest of New Zealand. Most of the main towns are at the mouths of rivers where there were ports, because sea transport was often the quickest way to travel in gold-rush days, when there were few roads.
