After 1945, rural Māori were drawn to cities by jobs and urban life. On arrival many faced racial discrimination. Noel Hilliard’s 1960 novel Maori girl portrayed the prejudice a young Māori woman experienced after moving from a village to Wellington. The book sparked controversy, challenging the notion that New Zealand was a tolerant society.
