Mākaro (Ward Island)

The eastern shore of Mākaro (Ward Island) has a fine beach, but is seldom visited. The island is about 250 metres long and 80 metres wide. Behind the beach are steep cliffs covered by dense taupata bush. It is a Department of Conservation reserve, and camping is not permitted. The island and water around it is mainly used by recreational divers and fishers.
