Salmon fishermen line up at the mouth of the Waimakariri River, Canterbury. Fishing for quinnat salmon (also called chinook or king salmon), which were introduced from Canada, is popular on the east coast of the South Island. The high-quality water in the rivers has allowed salmon to become established.
