Story: Wairarapa region
During the 1990s and early 2000s Wairarapa experienced a number of child murders. In 2002, a Violence Free Wairarapa campaign began. It aims to improve co-ordination between social agencies and works with at-risk families to reduce violence. Featherston five-year-old Coral Burrows was murdered in 2003, but promoters remain confident of good long-term results. The campaign’s symbol is a white ribbon.
