Story: Wairarapa region
The Wairarapa has a low percentage of young adults compared with New Zealand as a whole. This reflects the exodus of young people from the region once they have finished secondary school. In 2006 Wairarapa had 1,605 residents aged 20–24 – although five years earlier, 15–19-year-olds had numbered 2,484. Most probably left for tertiary education and greater job opportunities in cities.
