Campbell Island snipe

This is the first finding of a hitherto unknown population of snipe, discovered on tiny Jacquemart Island in 1997 by Jeremy Carroll and Dave Barker. After the eradication of rats from nearby Campbell Island, these snipe are rapidly increasing. Whether they should be considered a separate subspecies, or even a separate species from other New Zealand snipe, will be determined from DNA studies.
