Pied stilts, Tauranga Harbour

Outside the breeding season, pied stilts tend to congregate in estuaries to feed. The New Zealand population was around 30,000 birds in the mid-1990s. The same subspecies of pied stilt is also native to Australia and the western Pacific, where it is more commonly called the black-winged stilt.
