Wading birds that breed in New Zealand

Some of these species (with asterix) are endemic – they breed only in New Zealand. Some migrate within New Zealand, between their breeding and non-breeding grounds. Only one of these species migrates away – over half of the population of banded dotterels migrates to Australia after breeding inland in the South Island.
