The final and most powerful of Ngāuruhoe’s 1974–75 eruptions took place on 19 February 1975. Within about 30 seconds the ash cloud had risen and expanded. Some of the heavier material in the ash column had started to drop, forming pyroclastic flows that travelled 2 kilometres into the Mangatepopo valley.
