Story: Volcanic Plateau region

Rotorua from Pukeroa Hill, 1885 (2nd of 2)

Rotorua from Pukeroa Hill, 1885

The government had planned a town at Rotorua since 1881 but there was little to show for it four years later. In the middle distance are the post and telegraph office and other government buildings. Beyond, towards the lake, are Brent’s Hotel and the government sanatorium. A year later the Tarawera eruption further slowed the development of the town, until the arrival of the railway in 1894.
