Remains of the Te Mu church (2nd of 2)

Remains of the Te Mu church

The mission work at Te Wairoa ceased during the 1860s wars. However, 20 years later, the church still stood, covered with ivy, and was occasionally used for services. In 1886 it was buried in the eruption of Mt Tarawera. Some of the children in the 1859 image may have lost their lives at this time.
